Kashmir is not merely a destination — it is a feeling. The kind that settles into your bones and refuses to leave long after you have returned home. In 2025, it is also one of India's fastest-growing tourism stories.
Tourism to Jammu & Kashmir crossed 2.1 crore visitors in 2024 — a 40% increase from 2022 — driven by improved infrastructure, direct flights from 14 cities, and a wave of viral content that finally showed the world what locals have always known: nowhere in India looks like this.
New hotels, upgraded roads to Sonamarg and Gurez, and the opening of previously restricted valleys mean 2025 offers more of Kashmir to explore than ever before. If you have been waiting for the right moment — this is it.
Each season in Kashmir is a completely different world. There is no wrong time to visit — only different experiences waiting for you.
| Month | Weather | Crowd Level | Best For | Avg Temp |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March–May | Mild, pleasant | High | Tulip season, gardens | 8–20°C |
| June–August | Warm, green | Peak | Valleys, adventure | 18–28°C |
| September–November | Cool, golden | Medium | Photography, foliage | 10–22°C |
| December–February | Cold, snowy | Medium | Skiing, snowscapes | -4–8°C |
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia's largest tulip garden, blooms in late March through mid-April. Over 1.5 million tulips across 30+ varieties paint the hillside below the Zabarwan mountains. Combined with Mughal garden blossoms and clear skies, spring is Kashmir's most photographed season.
When the rest of India swelters, Kashmir hovers between 18 and 28°C. The valleys are impossibly green, Sonamarg's glaciers are accessible, and every trekking trail is open. This is peak season — book early.
The chinar trees turn from green to gold to deep crimson between September and November. Crowds thin, prices dip, and the light turns amber. Photographers call this the "golden window" — and they are right.
Gulmarg receives 3–5 metres of snowfall annually, making it Asia's highest skiable resort at 13,800 feet. The gondola, the powder slopes, and the silence of snow-covered valleys make Kashmir's winter unlike anything else in India.
The capital and cultural heart of Kashmir. Dal Lake and its network of waterways host houseboats where you can sleep over the water. The Mughal gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi — date back 400 years. The old city's wooden mosques and artisan alleys reward slow exploration. Fly in here; all Kashmir trips begin in Srinagar.
At 2,650 metres, Gulmarg is home to the world's highest gondola (13,400 ft), operating year-round. In winter it is South Asia's premier ski resort. In summer, it is a high-altitude meadow carpeted in wildflowers. 56 km from Srinagar, it is a day trip or an overnight stay. Book a skiing or gondola experience →
The Lidder River runs clear and fast through Pahalgam's pine-forested valley. Betaab Valley (named for a Bollywood film shot here) is a 15-minute drive. Aru Valley offers horse riding and day treks. White-water rafting on the Lidder is one of Kashmir's most popular activities. Pahalgam also serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.
Named for the golden wildflowers that bloom here, Sonamarg sits at 2,740 metres. Thajiwas Glacier is accessible by pony or on foot. Zero Point (at the road's end, 3,000 metres) offers snow even in summer. This is also the gateway to the Sindh Valley and some of Kashmir's best high-altitude camping.
An Inner Line Permit zone until 2023, Gurez is now open to tourists and rewards those who make the effort. The Kishanganga River cuts through dramatic landscapes flanked by the Habba Khatoon peak. Villages here have barely changed in centuries. Wildlife includes brown bears, snow leopards, and the Hangul (Kashmir stag). XOGUL runs guided offbeat expeditions to Gurez for small groups.
Kashmir can be done on a budget or in luxury — the infrastructure supports both. Here is a realistic breakdown:
| Category | Per Person (7 nights) | What is Included |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | ₹15,000–₹25,000 | Guesthouses, shared meals, local transport |
| Mid-range | ₹25,000–₹50,000 | Hotels or houseboat, most meals, private transfers |
| Luxury | ₹50,000–₹1,50,000+ | Premium houseboat/resort, curated experiences |
Airfare (Delhi–Srinagar return) adds ₹4,000–₹12,000 depending on timing. Booking early (6+ weeks out) during peak season saves 25–35%. XOGUL packages include accommodation, specified meals, local transfers and listed activities — no hidden costs.
Direct answer: Yes.Kashmir's tourist zones are fully safe, well-monitored by security forces, and visited by over 2 crore tourists annually. The Indian Army and police maintain strong presence in tourist corridors.
Tourist incidents are extremely rare. The areas covered by XOGUL — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Gurez — have had no significant tourist-targeted incidents in recent years. Political headlines about Kashmir should not be conflated with tourist safety, which is a completely different reality on the ground.
XOGUL provides pre-trip safety briefings, real-time local advisory access, 24/7 WhatsApp support, and contingency protocols for weather and travel disruptions. Every XOGUL trip has an emergency response plan.
XOGUL designs every itinerary from scratch based on your travel dates, group size, interests, and budget. Our most popular package categories:
Book houseboat stays directly through verified operators.
Touts at the airport offer "free" rides and then pressure you into overpriced houseboats. Book your accommodation before you land.
Dress in layers, every season.
Even summer evenings in Gulmarg or Sonamarg drop to 8–12°C. Always carry a light jacket.
Carry cash beyond Srinagar.
ATMs exist in Pahalgam and Gulmarg town, but remote areas like Gurez have none. Carry enough INR for 2–3 days.
Buy a local SIM at the airport.
Jio and Airtel work well across Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Coverage drops in Gurez.
Hire local guides for treks.
Paths are not always marked. A local guide improves safety, adds cultural context, and supports the local economy.
Respect local customs.
Kashmir is a predominantly Muslim region. Dress modestly at shrines and mosques. Photography of military installations is prohibited.
Plan Gulmarg gondola early.
Queues at the gondola can be 2+ hours long in peak season. Book online in advance or head there before 8 AM.
Travel insurance is essential.
Occasional weather disruptions can delay flights out of Srinagar. Ensure your policy covers trip delays and medical evacuation.
Download offline maps.
Google Maps works but can be unreliable in valleys. Download offline maps before leaving Srinagar.
The Wazwan must be eaten here.
Kashmir's 36-course formal banquet is a cultural experience. XOGUL arranges authentic Wazwan dinners. Do not leave without trying Rogan Josh, Yakhni, and Phirni.
Spring (March–May) is ideal for the Tulip Garden and pleasant weather. Summer (June–August) offers lush green valleys. Autumn (September–November) brings golden chinar foliage. Winter (December–February) is perfect for skiing in Gulmarg.
Budget trips cost ₹15,000–₹25,000 per person. Mid-range packages run ₹25,000–₹50,000 per person or couple. Luxury experiences start at ₹50,000 and can go above ₹1,50,000 for premium stays and private tours.
