Until recently, “Kashmir by train” really meant a train to Jammu and then a long, tiring road journey over the mountains. That changed in June 2025, when the Vande Bharat Express began running on the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL). For anyone planning a Kashmir trip, it opens up a calmer way to arrive, with a modern train taking you straight into the valley.
This guide is written for tourists, not railway enthusiasts. It explains how the journey works, how to book your tickets online, how Tatkal works if you are planning at the last minute, and how to start exploring the top places to visit in Kashmir once you step off at Srinagar. Last updated: October 2026. Timetables and booking rules change, so always confirm the details on IRCTC for your travel date.
Route
Jammu Tawi / Katra → Banihal → Srinagar
Journey time

Important: Xogul does not book train tickets
Train tickets for this route are booked online by the traveller on the IRCTC website or app. We do not issue or reserve rail tickets. Once your ticket is confirmed, share your train number and arrival time with us, and our team, a local Kashmir travel agency based in Srinagar, will take care of your pickup, stay and sightseeing. If you are travelling to Kashmir by train, the sections below show exactly how to book.
What changed: how Kashmir connects by rail today
The USBRL project finally closed the gap between the plains and the Kashmir Valley. Two engineering landmarks sit on this stretch. The Chenab Bridge is the world’s highest railway arch bridge, at roughly 359 metres above the riverbed. The Anji Khad Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. For first-time visitors, the ride itself now ranks among the best things to do in Kashmir.
The Vande Bharat between Katra and Srinagar was flagged off on 6 June 2025. Since spring 2026, at least one service also starts from Jammu Tawi, which means you can skip the road stretch that gets disrupted during the monsoon months.
One thing to be clear about: at the time of writing, there is no direct train from Delhi to Srinagar. An overnight Vande Bharat Sleeper has been announced for the future, but you should not plan a trip around it until Indian Railways publishes an official timetable. For now, the journey has two legs, which we cover below.
The route, and what you actually see
The train runs from Jammu Tawi through Udhampur to Katra, then climbs through the Pir Panjal range to Banihal before reaching Srinagar. The part worth keeping your phone ready for comes later: deep gorges, the big bridges, and then the moment the valley opens up. You will see paddy fields and orchards in the warmer months, golden chinars during Kashmir’s autumn season, and snow-covered slopes in winter.
Expect many tunnels, so photography happens in short windows rather than continuously. The morning service from Katra leaves around 8 AM and reaches Srinagar a little after 11 AM. That suits a same-day hotel check-in and a first evening on a shikara ride. An afternoon service reaches Srinagar in the early evening, around 6 PM.
How to book Vande Bharat tickets online
Train tickets are booked by you, directly on IRCTC. This is the official railway booking platform, and it is the safest way to get a confirmed seat. You can use the IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. If you want a local team to handle everything else, here is how to choose a tour operator in Kashmir. The ticket process itself is simple:
Step 1: Create or update your IRCTC account. You need a registered mobile number and email. Link your Aadhaar to the account in advance, because it is now required for online Tatkal booking.
Step 2: Pick your stations and date. Choose Katra or Jammu Tawi as your starting point and Srinagar as the destination. Search for the Vande Bharat on your date.
Step 3: Choose a class. The two options are Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. Check availability before you decide.
Step 4: Add passenger details. Names and ages must match the ID you will carry.
Step 5: Pay and save your ticket. You will get a PNR and an e-ticket. Keep a copy on your phone and carry your original photo ID.
Normal (General quota) booking opens 60 days before the journey date, usually at 8:00 AM, and the journey date itself is excluded from the count. Seats sell out fast in May–June, October and the winter snow season, so decide the best time to visit Kashmir first and set a reminder for the day your booking window opens.
Tatkal tickets for Srinagar: how it works
Tatkal is Indian Railways’ last-minute booking quota. If general tickets are sold out and you need to travel soon, this is your second chance. It is especially useful when you are fitting in a short break, such as a 4N/5D Kashmir tour, and your dates are fixed.

A few details trip people up. Tatkal opens one day before departure from the train’s originating station, not from where you board. If your train starts at Jammu Tawi and you board at Katra, the window still follows the Jammu Tawi departure date. Not every train and class carries a Tatkal quota, so look for the option on the IRCTC page for your exact train. Once your seat is sorted, see how travel companies plan a Kashmir itinerary around it. Here are the rules in plain language:
Aadhaar-linked account: Under the rules announced in 2025, online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-linked IRCTC account. Do this well before the day you need it.
Be logged in before 10:00 AM: Save your passenger details in advance, keep your payment method ready, and refresh the page right as the window opens.
No refund on confirmed tickets: If you cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket, you get nothing back. If a waitlisted Tatkal ticket is auto-cancelled, you are refunded.
No name change: Double-check every detail before paying.
Carry the same ID: At least one passenger must carry the ID used during booking, and the ticket checker can ask for it.
No concessions: Senior citizen and child concessions do not apply.
Is Tatkal a good plan for a Kashmir holiday? It is a backup, not a strategy. Last-minute Kashmir by train trips work best when your dates are flexible and you can try again the next morning. If your dates are fixed, such as a honeymoon trip or a family holiday, book as early as the window allows and use Tatkal only as a safety net.
Planning Kashmir by train from Delhi: the two-leg plan
Leg
Option
Approximate Time
Delhi → Katra
Day Vande Bharat, or overnight trains arriving early morning
About 8 hours by day train; overnight trains vary
Katra → Srinagar
Vande Bharat (morning or afternoon)
About 3 hours
Jammu Tawi → Srinagar
Vande Bharat that starts from Jammu Tawi
About 4.5–5 hours
There are two practical ways to do this. The first is an overnight train from Delhi that reaches Jammu Tawi or Katra early in the morning, followed by the morning Vande Bharat to Srinagar. It saves a night on the road but leaves very little buffer if the first train runs late. Early mornings can be cool, so keep warm layers within reach.
The second is to take a daytime train to Katra, stay the night, and board the Srinagar train fresh the next morning. If you are travelling with children or elderly parents, this plan is far less stressful. The extra hotel night is worth adding to your Kashmir trip budget, and remember that each leg is booked separately on IRCTC, with its own booking date.
Weighing this against flying? Travellers booking a Kashmir tour package from Mumbai or other distant cities usually still fly in, because the rail journey adds too many hours. Some people choose to fly in and take the train out for the scenery.
Train vs flight vs road: which one suits you
TrainScenic pick
Time into the valley
About 3–5 hours from Katra or Jammu
Weather exposure
Steadier than the highway, but not immune to heavy snow or landslides
Scenery
Gorges, bridges, valley views
Stress level
Low, once connections are planned
Flight
Time into the valley
About 1.5 hours from Delhi
Weather exposure
Fog and snow can cause delays in winter
Scenery
Mostly clouds, a few mountain views
Stress level
Low
Road (Jammu–Srinagar)
Time into the valley
Often 7–8 hours or more
Weather exposure
Most exposed to closures
Scenery
Good views, but a long day
The road is the weakest option for most tourists because of its length and weather closures. Heavy snowfall in December can shut the highway for hours or days. The train is not a guarantee against disruption, but it removes much of that risk.
Arriving at Srinagar railway station
Srinagar’s station is at Nowgam, on the outskirts of the city. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road to reach the Dal Lake area, depending on traffic. Do not leave your onward transfer to chance. A pre-booked cab with your driver’s number saves the usual scramble on arrival, especially if you land with luggage and family.
If you arrive in the morning, you can check in, rest for an hour, and be out by late afternoon. Nishat Bagh is a good garden stop if the light is still soft, and it is easy to reach from most Srinagar hotels.
Arriving in the evening? Skip sightseeing, settle in, and try Kashmiri wazwan for dinner. Starting the first day slowly means a delayed train will not ruin your plans.
When the train makes the most sense
Winter (December to February): Snowfall can make the highway unreliable. Rail is usually the more dependable overland option, though heavy snow can still cause delays. Kashmir by train in winter is also a beautiful ride. See what to expect in Kashmir in January.
Monsoon (July to September): Landslides near Jammu can interrupt the road. Rail avoids most of that stretch.
Peak season: Flights get crowded, and train seats sell out too. Book the day your window opens. September is a calmer month if your dates are flexible.
Who should take the train
Families and senior travellers often prefer it because the seats are comfortable, there is room to move, and there are no airport queues. Our family tour package guide covers how to pace the rest of the trip. Note that senior citizen concessions do not apply on Vande Bharat or in the Tatkal quota.
Pilgrims visiting Katra for Vaishno Devi can add Kashmir to the same journey, because a night at Katra fits naturally with the morning departure to Srinagar. The same logic helps Amarnath Yatra travellers who want a comfortable base in Srinagar before or after the pilgrimage.
Practical tips before you travel
Book on IRCTC as soon as your date window opens, and set a phone reminder.
Check the timetable and running days on NTES or IRCTC for your exact date. Not every service runs every day.
Reach the station 45 to 60 minutes early. Katra and Jammu Tawi have security checks, and a tight connection is the most common cause of missed trains.
Carry the photo ID that matches your ticket.
Pack for the destination, not the departure city. It can be warm in Jammu and cold in Srinagar on the same day. Check what to carry in our seasonal packing guide.
Common mistakes to avoid
Waiting too long to book: Seats vanish quickly in peak months. Do not assume Tatkal will save you.
Booking a tight connection: An overnight train that arrives late can make you miss the morning Vande Bharat. Build in a buffer or stay a night at Katra.
Assuming a direct Delhi–Srinagar train exists: It does not at the time of writing. Check for official announcements before you plan around one.
Planning a full sightseeing day on arrival: If your train is delayed, you will be rushing the first day. Keep it light.
Leaving the transfer to chance: Arrange your pickup before you board.
Conclusion
The train has quietly changed how people arrive in Kashmir. It is calmer than the road, more scenic than a flight, and with some planning around tickets, connections and the Srinagar transfer, it makes the first day of your trip far easier. Book your seat early, keep Tatkal as a backup, and arrange your pickup before you board. Our local Kashmir experts will take care of everything after you arrive.
Your tickets, our valley
You book the train on IRCTC. We handle the pickup, stay and sightseeing once you reach Srinagar.
Yes. The Vande Bharat Express runs between Katra and Srinagar on the USBRL rail link, and since spring 2026 at least one service also starts from Jammu Tawi. You can reach Katra or Jammu Tawi by train from Delhi and other cities, then continue to Srinagar. The service has made the valley far easier to reach than the older road-only route.
2. How long does the Katra to Srinagar train take?
About 3 hours. From Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, expect roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Morning and afternoon services run, so you can pick one that matches your hotel check-in.
3. Is there a direct train from Delhi to Srinagar?
Not at the time of writing. Travellers currently take a train to Katra or Jammu Tawi and then board the Vande Bharat to Srinagar. A direct overnight Vande Bharat Sleeper has been announced, so check Indian Railways for the latest status, or compare options in our Kashmir tour package from Delhi guide.
4. How do I book a train ticket to Srinagar online?
Book on the IRCTC website or Rail Connect app. Search Katra or Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, pick the Vande Bharat and a class, enter passenger details and pay. Normal booking opens 60 days before travel, usually at 8:00 AM, so plan ahead for busy months.
5. When does Tatkal booking open for the Srinagar train?
Tatkal opens one day before the journey date, excluding the journey day, counted from the train’s originating station. For AC classes the window opens at 10:00 AM. Availability depends on the train and class, so check the booking page.
6. Can I cancel a Tatkal ticket for a refund?
No refund is given on a confirmed Tatkal ticket. If a waitlisted Tatkal ticket is cancelled automatically because it did not confirm, you are refunded as per railway rules. Because of this, book Tatkal only when your dates are certain.
7. Does Xogul book train tickets for guests?
No. We do not book train tickets. You book them yourself online on IRCTC. Once your ticket is confirmed, share your train number and arrival time through our contact page and we will arrange your pickup, stay and sightseeing, or you can explore options on the trip builder.
8. Does the train run in winter and during snowfall?
Services generally run through winter, but heavy snowfall, landslides or technical issues can cause delays or cancellations. Check NTES on the day of travel and keep some buffer in your plan. Our guide to Kashmir in December explains what winter conditions look like.
9. Is the train better than flying to Srinagar?
It depends on where you start. If you are coming from Delhi and have limited time, flying is quicker. If you want a scenic arrival, prefer to avoid airports, or travel in winter or monsoon when the highway is unreliable, the train from Katra or Jammu is a strong option. Travellers from the south can see flight routes in our Bangalore guide.
10. Is the train to Kashmir safe for tourists?
Kashmir by train is a common choice for tourists and locals on this route. For a broader picture, see our guide on whether Kashmir is safe to visit in 2026, and check official advisories before you travel.
